Caring for children’s teeth… the foundation for a healthy smile

Introduction:

Caring for baby teeth from a young age impacts oral health for a lifetime. Simple instructions and early intervention can prevent tooth decay and lay a solid foundation for future oral health.

When to Start Care?

Dental care begins with the eruption of the first tooth. Clean the gums with a soft cloth until the teeth appear, then use a small brush and a child-friendly flavored toothpaste as soon as the teeth emerge.

Practical Tips for Parents:

  • Early Dental Visits: The first visit is recommended by or before the age of one, or when the first tooth erupts, to evaluate and educate parents.
  • Nutrition and Reducing Sugar: Limiting junk food and sweetened beverages reduces the risk of cavities.
  • Fluoride and Preventive Fillings: Applying topical fluoride or using fluoride toothpaste at the right concentration protects teeth. In some cases, we use dental sealants (fissure sealants) for protection.
  • Teaching Hygiene in a Fun Way: Use games or songs to encourage your child to brush regularly.

What About Dental Anxiety?

Gentle handling, simplified explanations, the presence of a companion, and short introductory sessions help build the child’s trust and make routine visits less stressful.

Investing in pediatric dental care early prevents major problems later and builds healthy lifelong habits. The dental team at Dr. Mouhannad Awad Center is trained to handle children, providing gentle and effective care.
