Caring for children’s teeth… the foundation for a healthy smile

photo

Introduction:

Caring for baby teeth from a young age impacts lifelong oral health. Simple instructions and early intervention can prevent tooth decay and lay a solid foundation for good oral health later on.

When should care begin?
Care begins as soon as the first tooth erupts. Clean the gums with a soft cloth until the teeth emerge, then use a small toothbrush and toothpaste with a suitable flavor for children as soon as the teeth appear.

Practical tips for parents:

  • Early dental checkups: The first visit should ideally be before or around the age of one, or when the first tooth erupts, for evaluation and parental education.
  • Diet and sugar reduction: Limiting fast food and sugary drinks reduces the risk of cavities.
  • Fluoride and protective fillings: Applying topical fluoride or using fluoride toothpaste with an appropriate concentration protects teeth. In some cases, we use groove sealants for protection.
  • Making dental hygiene fun for children: Use games or songs to encourage your child to brush regularly.

What about fear of the dentist?

A gentle approach, simple explanations for the child, the presence of an attendant, and short introductory meetings help build the child’s confidence and make routine visits less stressful.

Investing in early childhood dental care prevents major problems later in life and fosters healthy habits for life. The dental team at Dr. Muhannad Awad’s Center is trained to work with children to provide gentle and effective care.
