Introduction:
Successful treatment is not complete without proper aftercare. Following simple steps after fillings, crowns, implants, or whitening prolongs the life of the treatment and reduces the need for future repairs.
General advice after any treatment:
- Follow your doctor’s instructions: Your doctor may give you specific instructions (medications, mouthwash, dietary restrictions) — adherence to these instructions aids healing.
- Avoid hard/sticky foods for a few days: Especially after new fillings or restorations to help them settle without putting undue pressure on them.
- Manage pain and sensitivity: Use prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as needed, and inform your doctor if sensitivity persists for more than a week.
- Maintain meticulous oral hygiene: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss daily, and use a medicated mouthwash as needed.
- Regular checkups: Follow-up visits (6–12 months or as recommended by your doctor) detect any problems early.
Specific advice for certain procedures:
- After implants: Avoid putting pressure on the implant site, avoid smoking to promote healing, and follow a soft diet for the first two weeks. After whitening: Avoid colored drinks (coffee, tea, sauces) for 48–72 hours.
- After crowns or bridges: Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated side for the first two days, and be sure to clean under the bridge with dental floss.
